Auckland’s ‘perfect storm’: Olivia Dean to kick off new concert venue

An outdoor concert stage with large screens and light towers stands on a green field, with stadium seating labeled "WESTERN SPRINGS BOWL" and trees in the background under a blue sky.

As the sun rises on the drenched Western Springs Bowl in west Auckland, there’s a sense of anticipation in the air.

The forecast for October 17th is locked in: sunny, with a chance of clouds forming and history being made.

It's been a long journey to this new concert venue. The concept itself was first proposed in 2024, and confirmed in March 2026 following approval by Auckland councillors.

Costing $2.5 million, the renovations finished on time and on budget.

Gone is the iconic speedway of the formerly known Western Springs Stadium. In its place is a semi-permanent stage, lush green grass and enough portaloos to service a small army.

And that service may be needed sooner rather than later, with more than 40-thousand people expected at the new venue’s debut on Saturday.

Of course, most will be there to see popstar Olivia Dean on her 'The Art of Loving' tour.

But Tātaki Auckland Unlimited's Auckland Stadiums Director, James Parkinson, admits he couldn’t have asked for better conditions.

“There's no question that there will be a lot of eyes on Saturday night's show and how the venue performs. That's why we're so excited to have Olivia Dean launching. I mean, it's a perfect platform to introduce new concertgoers to the venue,” he told rova, quick to add that no venue lives or dies on one show.

“We've got a lot of exciting leads within the industry for shows in the future. I think it's going to ultimately be the culmination of those shows, and the diversity of shows that the venue's able to host, that will be the proof of the concept.”

Pyrotechnics have been ruled out, through careful consideration of neighbours at the Auckland Zoo.

But longstanding partner and concert promoter Brent Eccles still beams with excitement.

“To have someone like Olivia Dean coming, it's a perfect storm. Riding high, any venue in the world will take her right now,” he said.

In Eccles’ eyes, a new era has begun.

“It's a new understanding of how the business works, and making venues attractive for promoters to bring international artists here is very important. I think we've done that, and I think in many ways, young, up-and-coming artists like Olivia are going to be our calling card.”

He’s already hearing about bookings and enquiries for next year, but remains focused on seeing the project through.

“Venues have never really been my thing, to be honest. I'm a promoter! But this venue, it's got a place in my heart - a place in my soul. I had to be a part of it, and I'm beside myself that we've got this far,” he finished.

The Foo Fighters are already lined up to play next, followed by Laneway.

And if Olivia Dean isn’t your vibe, don’t fear; there are four other major events scheduled  in Auckland, on the same day:

  • Meet the Silver Ferns, 10am-12pm

  • Auckland FC vs Melbourne City FC, 5pm

  • Stan Walker, 6.30pm

  • Macy Gray Live, 7.30pm

Unsurprisingly, Tātaki Auckland Unlimited is warning of potential traffic delays.
