As if finding a spider in your house wasn't enough to make you jump out of your skin, an Auckland woman has seemingly discovered a scorpion in her bathroom.
Yesterday, food and travel writer Anna King Shahab shared the mysterious crawly on her Instagram account @lazysusan.nz, writing: "Um, we found a live scorpion in our bathroom in Auckland, NZ (we do not have scorpions in NZ)."
In the video, the critter is seen crawling around, but it was later confirmed by Shahab to have died after being contained by a jar.
She said she'd already contacted the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and handed it over for investigation.
Naturally, she spent the rest of the day trying to figure out exactly what had turned up in her house.
“You bet I’ve been obsessively researching this all day, and my money is on a Dwarf Wood Scorpion - they’re very small, pretty harmless and found throughout SE Asia and parts of Oceania,” she wrote.
“Eagerly awaiting actual scientific findings.”

MPI has since confirmed to Stuff that a biosecurity surveillance officer collected the scorpion and that it was dead when they received it.
It's now headed to a lab where entomologists will formally identify the species.
But before we all go checking every corner of the house to see if a similar creature is lurking, MPI Manager of Biosecurity Surveillance), Nick Ward told Stuff that scorpions occasionally make their way into New Zealand as "hitch-hiker pests" and are usually considered a "low biosecurity risk".
He explained that most scorpion species need specific living conditions - usually consistently warm and dry - making it difficult for them to survive long-term in NZ's climate.

Ward added that they often travel alone rather than colonial like ants or termites.
According to MPI, the person who reported the scorpion had recently returned to NZ from a country where scorpions are commonly found.
Though, finding out that one potentially made it's way back with you, is enough to unlock a new fear.
As for what species this one is, it's still to be confirmed by MPI.
