Aucklanders: You can score a free doughnut today - no strings attached

If your Friday needs a bit of a sugar-fuelled pick-me-up (and whose doesn't?), we have some exceptionally good news for you.

Today is officially National Doughnut Day, and Krispy Kreme is giving away a whopping 10,000 free Original Glazed doughnuts across Tāmaki Makaurau.

To put that into perspective, if you stacked 10,000 of those bad boys on top of each other, it would cover the height of the Sky Tower three whole times. That is a serious amount of glaze.

The best part? There’s absolutely no catch. You don't need to buy anything or sign up for a loyalty programme; you just have to show up.

How to get your free doughnut:

• The Deal: One free Original Glazed doughnut per person.

• Where: Any participating Krispy Kreme store across Auckland (while stocks last).

• When: All day on Friday, June 5 (just check your local store's opening hours before you head out).

Because New Zealanders collectively lose their minds for free food, you can definitely expect some queues. If you want to beat the crowds, the insiders recommend hitting up your local store during the quieter window between 7 am and 9 am. Perfect timing for a pre-work breakfast run.

If you can't make it down on Friday, there is actually a little-known loophole to score a freebie any other day of the year.

Whenever you pass a select Krispy Kreme store and see their iconic 'Hot Light' switched on, it means a fresh batch is rolling off the line. If you pop in while that light is glowing, you can score a hot, fresh Original Glazed right then and there.
