Auckland Council Launches AI Assistant to Tackle City Gripes

Auckland Council has launched a new AI assistant called ‘Ask Auckland Council’ to help residents report common neighborhood issues like graffiti, roaming dogs, and missed bins. Mayor Wayne Brown says the tool is all about making life easier by using smart technology to meet the demand for simpler ways to talk to the council. It is now live and can be used on any smartphone or computer.
This new tool is much smarter than a basic chatbot. It can understand everyday language, recognize te reo Māori names, and even analyze photos you upload of a problem. Because it’s a conversational AI, it asks follow-up questions to make sure it has all the right details before sending the report through. This helps the council get the exact information they need to fix things faster.
The council decided to build this tool after hearing that the old reporting systems were too confusing and frustrating. Testing showed that the new AI is nearly twice as easy to use as the old methods, with 80 percent of users finding it simple to navigate. Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson says the goal was to create something "by Aucklanders, for Aucklanders" that feels intuitive and safe.
You can find the assistant on the council’s "Report a Problem" webpage and even save it to your phone’s home screen like an app. While it currently handles the most frequent complaints, more categories will be added soon. The council is also working on its internal systems to ensure that once a problem is reported via the AI, it gets repaired or resolved more quickly than before.
In the future, this AI could become a "single front door" for all council services, acting as a one-stop shop for information. For now, it’s a secure and easy way for locals to help look after their community. While the AI is the fastest way to get things done, traditional reporting channels remain open for those who still prefer to use them.
