Catch the latest episode of The House of Wellness with Chemist Warehouse on The Breeze, where Mike is joined by broadcaster Nicky Stryis, author of “Eat Wild” Sophie Merkens, CEO of Breast Cancer Cure Sonja de Mari, with Breast Cancer researcher Dr Andrew Shelling and resident pharmacist Piyara Perera.

Featured Guest: Nicky Styris

Sports journalist, commentator and familiar face to The House of Wellness, Nicky Styris, returned to give insights into staying healthy and energetic after 50.

Nicky explained that when it comes to ageing and nutrition, it's best to “go back to basics”.

Focusing on whole, unprocessed foods, eating a balanced plate of protein, complex carbs, healthy fats and incorporating variety and colour into meals is best.

She recommends nutrient-dense options like quinoa, millet and hemp seeds, encouraging older adults not to fear carbs, but rather choose wisely and watch portion sizes.

Nicky also recommends eating 1-1.2 grams of protein for every kilo of body weight. She swears by boiled eggs, tinned fish, cottage cheese and homemade desserts with Greek yoghurt and berries to avoid unhealthy snacking.

Featured Guest: Sophie Merkens

Author, photographer and food stylist Sophie Merkens has released Eat Wild, a stunning new book that celebrates foraging, hunting and gathering across Aotearoa.

More than a cookbook, Sophie explained, it’s a journey into wild food traditions - from native plants and invasive weeds to seaweed, fungi and wild meats, all transformed into nourishing recipes.

Driven by a love of storytelling and connection, Sophie explores the deep ties between food, whenua (land) and whakapapa (ancestry), highlighting how foraging can be both affordable and sustainable.

Featured Guests: Sonja de Mari and Dr Andrew Shelling

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month shines a spotlight on one of New Zealand’s most prevalent diseases, Breast Cancer Cure CEO Sonja de Mari and leading cancer researcher Dr Andrew Shelling highlighted the urgent need for continued investment in local research.

Breast Cancer Cure has been solely dedicated to funding New Zealand-based breast cancer research for 28 years, contributing over $11 million to groundbreaking projects.

Despite rising survival rates, New Zealand’s breast cancer mortality rate remains 20% higher than Australia’s, largely due to limited access to life-saving treatments.

Dr Shelling stresses the importance of precision medicine and early diagnosis, while Sonja champions creative fundraising efforts. Together, they call for action; more research, better treatments and ongoing support.

Resident Pharmacist: Piyara Perera

This week, Piyara joined Mike to chat about a common skin concern - dark circles and pigmentation.

Caused by factors like genetics, sun exposure, hormonal changes and post-acne inflammation, these skin issues often become more noticeable as the skin naturally thins with age.

Piyara recommended following a simple but consistent routine that includes chemical exfoliation, niacinamide serum, collagen-infused under-eye patches and the non-negotiable daily SPF 50.

She highlights that prevention is key, especially with the early use of hydrating products and sunscreen. But for those already experiencing pigmentation, she recommends identifying the root cause, staying consistent with treatments and being patient as fading takes time.

Featured Product: La Roche Posay Mela B3 Serum

La Roche Posay Mela B3 Serum is a new anti-hyperpigmentation niacinamide serum aimed at visibly correcting and preventing hyperpigmentation.
