An American choir has moved the internet with a beautiful rendition of the waiata 'Kei Wareware i a Tātou'.
California-based Choral Audacity Choir Director Darita Seth shared the performance on TikTok, where it’s now been viewed over 200,000 times.
“It’s not the original and we are not Māori, but we are absolutely enamoured with this song and are honoured to give our attempt at it,” he wrote.
Their harmonies will give you full-body goosies, and the high notes are flawless.
What makes this performance stand out is its solo moment, which really highlights singer Emily Riggin absolutely nailing her verse.
Seth explained that the theme of their concert was to honour native and indigenous voices.
“When I heard this song a few months ago on TikTok, I felt it was necessary to help share this story of the Māori. The audience was engaged and moved the entire time.”
He added that they did their research and translations, and choir members weren’t allowed to sing it unless they knew what they were singing about.
The comments are full of praise for the group’s effort, with one person writing: “If that’s an attempt, then it’s the best attempt ever. I’m Māori and I’m so much in awe of your soloist and whole choir. It’s our honour to hear you all 😍🥰.”
Another said: “It goes to show you don’t have to be Māori to feel the wairua of Māori. Beautiful ancestors would be proud to hear our waiata being sung by all.”
A third added: “Beautiful, can hear your hearts coming through this song. I’m Māori, first time I’ve heard this song, then I watched the Matatini version and [I’m] very proud of the love and respect you all showed for this song. Thank you for sharing your love with the world.”
The track gained major attention earlier this year after being performed at Te Matatini by Te Kuru Marutea (Te Tauihu o Te Waka a Māui).
The group won the Aku Mahi Kōhine Pōnika Memorial Trophy for fan-voted people’s choice - and it’s not hard to see why it’s become a favourite all the way across the world.
