The Black Ferns are on the search for a new head coach, with Allan Bunting confirming he won’t renew his contract with New Zealand Rugby (NZR).

The decision comes after a rough World Cup run this year, where we, the reigning champs, convincingly lost in the semifinals to a strong Canada side.

NZR confirmed a process is underway to appoint the new coach, alongside an “extensive review” following the World Cup.

Chris Lendrum, NZR general manager of professional rugby and performance, said the programme came a long way, but “ultimately fell short of their goal”.

Still, Lendrum had nothing but praise for Bunting, calling him a “courageous leader who is authentically himself and cares for people”.

He credited Bunting for helping “the growth of our women’s pathways and the development of players” and for building a culture that lets players thrive.

Bunting, who took over the job in 2023, has led the Ferns through some tough battles, finishing his tenure impressively.

However, in recent times, they’ve struggled against the heavyweight nations, with four wins, seven losses, and a draw against England, Canada, France, and Ireland.

Bunting has called it “an absolute honour to lead the Black Ferns in this position.”

"I’m incredibly proud of what we set out to achieve together, from building connections, growing the depth of our wāhine, and enhancing this group to represent Aotearoa with mana on and off the field."

Big shoes to fill, but whoever’s next will inherit a team with heart, history, and a heap of pride still to play for.
