Air NZ is trialling a new option to keep us connected in the air on domestic flights

No more “I’ll message when I land” texts.

Quickly downloading your Netflix shows or Podcasts before boarding a domestic flight may soon be a thing of the past - at least on one of Air New Zealand's Domestic Planes.

Previously announced in 2023, Air New Zealand has confirmed the move on social media today, teasing: “In a world first, an ATR (regional transport) will be joining the trial soon.”

Until now, in-flight Wi-Fi has only been available on international Air NZ flights.

From today, high-speed internet will be trialled onboard Air NZ’s Airbus A320 with the registration ZK-OXE, which regularly flies between Auckland, Christchurch, and Queenstown.

It’s powered by Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellites, giving passengers the ability to stream, scroll, message, or even get some work done while flying above the clouds.

Air New Zealand’s Chief Digital Officer, Nikhil Ravishankar, said: “From streaming video content to working while onboard, and instantly messaging friends and family, Air New Zealand customers will be able to access the internet as if they were in their lounge at home.”

But before you get too carried away with your usual usage, there are still a few rules in place.

Current aviation regulations still ban voice or video calls on apps like Messenger and WhatsApp.

A few other no-nos - which shouldn't surprise anyone - include downloading large apps or updates, streaming high-resolution video, online gaming, and viewing offensive material.

So if you’re lucky enough to score free wifi while on a domestic flight, make the most of it - just maybe have a backup movie downloaded until the trial is over.
