A Strawberry Moon is lighting up NZ skies tonight - here's what it means

If you’ve been hearing about a Strawberry Moon rising in the sky this week and wondering what that actually means… you’re not the only one!
Is a Strawberry Full Moon actually pink?
Despite the name, the Moon will not actually look like a strawberry (though that would be pretty impressive), and while you might assume it turns a reddish hue like a Blood Moon, that’s not the case either.
It actually gets its name from the wild strawberry harvesting season used by Indigenous North American tribes. While it marks the first full Moon of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, there are still some pretty cool things worth watching for us down here in the Southern.
So if you’re in the mood for a bit of moongazing, this one’s worth keeping an eye out for.
Here’s what to know and what it could mean for you in the world of astrology.
When to see June’s Strawberry Full Moon in NZ
Your best viewing window is tonight, Tuesday June 30, 2026, from moonrise (around 4:45pm).
The Strawberry Moon will be visible all night, reaching its highest and brightest point near midnight.
What makes it such a big deal?
According to Forbes Science, this Strawberry Full Moon is also a micro full moon - basically the opposite of a supermoon - when the Moon is at or near its furthest point from Earth in its orbit.
While it may appear slightly smaller, it will still shine brightly in the night sky. It’s also the last full micromoon of 2026.
EarthSky’s June Moon report, says the Southern Hemisphere is currently experiencing one of its highest moonpaths in decades - meaning the Moon will travel unusually high across the sky.
What does it mean for you?
If you’re into the astrology side of things, you’re in for a ride with this one.
The Strawberry Full Moon is in Capricorn.
According to tarot reader and our resident spiritual guide Ashlee Williams (@iallowabundance), the Strawberry Moon is set to seriously test our patience levels.

For those big on manifestation, she says this Moon is here to remind us that “hard work and dedication are what are required”.
“Capricorn friends, you’ll be feeling this Moon the most, so don’t worry if you feel like crashing out,” she says.
Ashlee also encourages people to “feel the feelings you’ve been ignoring”.
“Do the work you need to, but acknowledge your emotional limits. Take things one step at a time. Be kind and gentle with the feelings you’ve likely been avoiding as we’re also heading into Mercury retrograde in Cancer.”
So whether you’re keen for a bit of moongazing, wanted the heads-up on why emotions might feel a bit extra this week, or just wanted to finally understand what a Strawberry Moon actually is - now you’re sorted.
