A 25-year-old rock singer named Dakota Cohen has turned heads on The Voice after taking on Black Sabbath’s classic ‘Changes’ for her audition.
Cohen might be a new name to most of us, but she’s been doing the rounds for a while. She grew up loving rock music, has played in cover bands and, according to her bio, has already performed at festivals including Lollapalooza, SXSW and Summerfest.
For The Voice, though, she kept things pretty simple.
Standing solo at the mic, Cohen kicked into ‘Changes’ over the song’s piano before the band slowly joined in behind her. Her raspy voice worked bloody well with it too.
The coaches made her wait for it, but Adam Levine and Riley Green eventually turned their chairs just seconds apart near the end.
Kelly Clarkson was loving it, telling Cohen: “That little rasp in your voice, that is so rock 'n' roll and cool. I really feel you should keep that going.”
Green reckoned she’d nailed the song choice too.
“Dakota, that was a perfect song choice for you. I feel like I got to know a lot about you with this short performance and also got to see your range.”
Look, covering Sabbath is always a risky little assignment, but Cohen did a solid job with an absolute tune.
And hearing Black Sabbath pop up on The Voice? Love to see it.
