Well, it’s official - the 2025 Word of the Year has dropped, and I regret to inform you that it’s ‘67’.
Yep, the internet’s youngest meme makers, Gen Alpha, have done it again. The ‘67’ meme has taken over so much that Dictionary.com decided to crown it the winning ‘word’ of the year.
If you’re blinking at your screen wondering how two numbers have landed the title, you can thank a meme that went so viral, it’s literally taken over Gen Alpha’s vocabulary both online and in person.
So what is ‘67’? The short answer is: no one really knows for sure.
The slightly longer answer: It all started after a clip from an amateur basketball game went viral of a kid yelling “six-seven,” while waving his hands up and down.
Others reckon it originally came from rapper Skrila’s song ‘Doot Doot (6 7)’, where he raps “6-7, I just bipped right on the highway.”
The other theory is that it might be linked to NBA player LaMelo Ball, who happens to be 6 foot 7.
Basically, no one’s entirely sure what it means - which, according to Dictionary.com, is kind of the point.
They describe ‘67’ as “brainrot slang” - purposefully weird, a bit meaningless, and more about being in on the joke than anything else.
The numbers back it up too - ‘67’ was used six times more in October than through all of 2024.
Other finalists this year included ‘agnetic’, ‘aura farming’, ‘Gen Z stare’, and ‘tradwife’. So… yeah. We’re definitely living through a linguistic fever dream.
For those with grommets, you’ve probably heard these two numbers more times than you ever thought you would this year - and now it’s officially cemented in 2025 history, whether you like it or not.
