16-year-old gets AGT Golden Buzzer for her insane Soundgarden performance

Sixteen-year-old Thai guitarist and singer Nene Royal has scored the Golden Buzzer on America’s Got Talent after ripping through Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” during the show’s Tuesday quarterfinal.

The young musician from Phuket City, Thailand walked out with a guitar, a wall of smoke and the fairly casual task of tackling one of Chris Cornell’s most iconic songs.

Royal didn’t try to play it safe either. She kicked things off with one of her now-signature screams, before dropping into the darker, quieter parts of “Black Hole Sun” and letting the song breathe. Then came the big vocals and some seriously tidy guitar work.

The performance earned a standing ovation, with Howie Mandel singing her praises afterwards.

“I know I'm not supposed to say this, but NBC give her the million right now.”

Sofia Vergara reckoned Royal could win the whole thing, while Mel B admitted heavy music isn’t normally her bag.

“Your vocals are on point, your guitar is on point, your look, your energy, your vibe, how could I not do this?”

She then smashed the Golden Buzzer, sending Royal straight through as her family joined her onstage.

Royal first turned heads on AGT with a huge version of The Cranberries’ “Zombie”, going from quietly spoken 16-year-old to absolute weapon the second the music started.

She later backed that up with Muse’s “Hysteria” during a callback performance for Mandel and guest judge Nikki Glaser.

Royal reportedly started playing guitar around seven, is largely self-taught and learned by ear from online videos.

At 16, she’s now casually tearing through Cornell, Dolores O’Riordan and Matt Bellamy songs on American telly. How good.
