While most 10-year-olds are currently stressing over whether they’ll get the "good" teacher this year or if they can finally beat their PB on their scooter, one Porirua legend has been busy smashing exams meant for teenagers.

Meet Raymond Hsu. He’s a Year 6 student, a fan of Roald Dahl, a karate enthusiast, and - as of this week - the owner of some seriously impressive NCEA and Cambridge results.

As reported by RNZ, Raymond recently sat staring at his computer screen, waiting for the NZQA portal to load. When it finally did, the kid absolutely lost it - "screaming, flapping his arms, jumping around the room" The reason? He’d just bagged Merit grades in NCEA Level 1 and 2.

Keep in mind, these are the exams that usually have 16 and 17-year-olds living on a diet of energy drinks and panic.

But Raymond isn’t just a "maths whiz" (though he’s pretty handy with an algebraic equation). He’s also been tackling Cambridge International exams, proving he can dissect Shakespeare and write essays on complex literature as well as crunch numbers.

His dad, Michael, told RNZ that while the academic stuff is cool, he’s worked hard to make sure Raymond is still just… a kid. Their lounge is a classic Kiwi scene: train tracks on the floor, board games everywhere, and the occasional sibling scrap over a game of Monopoly.

It hasn’t all been smooth sailing, though. Michael opened up about the "uphill battle" of getting the system to recognise Raymond’s giftedness, with some schools and even NZQA initially saying he was just too young for the advanced stuff.

Despite the big brain, Raymond’s staying grounded. He didn’t even plan on telling his mates at school about his results. He’d rather just get to class early to play before the bell rings.

Absolute legend. We’re calling it now - this won't be the last time we hear the name Raymond Hsu.
